Description: Kadambari, among Sanskrit literature's most celebrated romantic novels, was penned by Banabhatta, court poet to King Harshavardhana, in the early 7th century AD. When Banabhatta died before completing this lengthy work, his son Bhushanabhatta finished it. The original features an intricate plot where Kadambari herself appears only midway through. This beloved tale also appears in the Kathasaritsagara and other ancient collections, continuing to inspire translations across Indian languages. Often considered one of the earliest novels, Kadambari has influenced Indian literature so profoundly that the word itself now means "novel" in many Indian languages today.
