The Lady with the Books

By   Kathy Stinson

Age Group: 6 - 9 Years

Description:

In the ruined streets of Munich just after World War II, Anneliese and her little brother Peter are always hungry, and always grieving the father they lost. One day they follow a crowd into a big building, hoping for food — and instead find something they never expected: a great hall filled with more children's books than they can count! There they meet the kind "lady with the books," who invites them to read as much as they like and to come back again. This gentle, moving picture book is inspired by the real Jella Lepman, whose belief that books could build "bridges of understanding" gave hope to war-torn children.
