Ella Rubinstein, a dissatisfied suburban housewife, takes a job reviewing a novel about the thirteenth-century poet Rumi and the wandering dervish Shams of Tabriz, whose friendship transformed Rumi into a mystic and poet. As Ella reads Shams's forty rules of love and Sufi philosophy, she becomes increasingly drawn into the manuscript's spiritual wisdom, and unexpectedly begins a passionate correspondence with its author that transforms her own stagnant life and marriage.
