Set partly in war-torn 1970s Cyprus and partly in present-day London, this novel follows the forbidden love between Kostas, a Greek Cypriot, and Defne, a Turkish Cypriot, torn apart by their divided island's ethnic conflict. Decades later, their teenage daughter Ada grapples with grief and unanswered questions about her heritage. Part of the story is narrated by a fig tree, smuggled from Cyprus to London, whose roots and memories connect the family's past and present.
